TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER BEFORE JOINING OCEAN GROUP.

Before I became a deckhand, I worked in an office as a secretary. I felt that I was stagnating and that I could grow more. I was immediately attracted to this little-known job when I heard about the deckhand profession! What attracted me to Ocean Group was that I work on the tugs during the day and go home at night. That's worth all the gold in the world!!

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR DAILY ROUTINE AS A DECKHAND?

Throughout the year, deckhands are called upon to assist with tug maneuvers, helping vessels dock and undock. But the day-to-day work of deckhands is highly diversified and adapts to the seasons! In the winter, duties include shovelling snow from the deck and docks, cleaning engines in the engine room, assisting the Chief Engineer with various projects, and maintaining dock facilities. In the summer, deckhands are busy refurbishing vessels and painting tugs from wheelhouse to hull.

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER AT OCEAN GROUP?

As for highlights, there are many, but my favourite was when we spent a week in Tadoussac in March 2024 to help a vessel that had caught fire. I had the opportunity to speak with the vessel's crew, and we worked alongside a dozen American firefighters who had come to put out the blaze. Fortunately, no one was injured, but to see it all unfold before my eyes and to have the chance to contribute to the rescue was incredible!

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACE DAILY?

The biggest challenge I face is working in all kinds of weather. Whether it is 30 degrees or -30 degrees, operations never stop. It is not always easy, but I would not change my job for anything.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR FUTURE WITH OCEAN GROUP?

As for my future with Ocean Group, I plan to stay as long as possible! Working outdoors in all seasons can be tough, but I always manage to keep a smile on my face because this is where I belong.
