Can you tell us about your career at Ocean?

My experience at Ocean began at the Isle-aux-Coudres shipyard, where I worked for over three years. During that time, I helped build several Ocean tugs, including the OCEAN PIERRE-JULIEN and the OCEAN TUNDRA. I was then transferred to Quebec City to join the industrial naval repair division. During these years, I worked on the repair and maintenance of several vessels, including Coast Guard and Société des traversiers du Québec boats.

Can you describe your role as A3 mechanic team leader?

My day-to-day work mainly involves installing and repairing mechanical systems on ships under construction or in dry dock. This involves inspecting, maintaining and repairing ships' propulsion systems, ventilation systems, propellers and hull valves. Now that I'm a team leader, I help the foremen manage the team and share my knowledge. After 22 years in the marine industry, I've learned a lot, and now I'm passing on this know-how to the younger generation!

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced on your journey here, and how did you overcome it?

One of the biggest challenges was a few years ago on the UMIAK I cargo ship. We had to check the bolts on the ship's propeller blades in the middle of winter, at -30°C, here in Quebec City. The boat was still in the water and we had to ballast the entire bow and empty the stern to gain access to the propellers. It took us several days of preparation, and despite the extreme conditions, we did a great job! A great challenge!

What motivates you most in your job?

What I like most about my job is that it's never routine. Every day brings new challenges, and that's what motivates me. I particularly enjoy sharing my experience and training the next generation of marine workers.
